Do Not Touch My Fish
If you've ever been diving, you've likely noticed your dive buddy or guide grab a fish or other marine life. This is harmful to the fish because they lose their anti-bacterial layer, making them more susceptible to parasites. Manta rays and whale sharks, for example, can become sick when touched. This can also make them vulnerable to predators.

Fish are delicate, and any grabbing or squeezing could damage their fins or gills. They also have a slime coat on their bodies that prevents bacteria from entering their body. But, this layer can also be peeled off by skin contact. Also, touching can cause the fish to panic, and this could further harm their bodies.

It's best to use a net when handling your fish. When scooping them out of their aquariums, be sure not to touch their fins, and wash your hands thoroughly before touching them. If you must touch your fish, scoop them gently with your hands, but only if it is absolutely necessary. In some cases, professionals at the fish store will handle them with their hands, when they're sorting out the fish.
