5 Ways to Use Shape Hunter to Teach Shapes
Shape Hunter is a fun and easy way to help children learn about shapes. It's great for home or school and can be done indoors or outdoors. It can be used with toddlers, preschoolers or older students.
The lesson starts by reading a book about shapes and discussing the different shapes that are used in everyday objects. Next, the children will go on a hunt to find items that are shaped like the shapes they've been learning about in the book. Once the children have found an object, they will draw it on their recording sheet.
This lesson is a great way to practice visual discrimination, which will help children learn how to identify shapes as well as numbers and letters. It also helps to prepare for future math lessons by teaching the fundamentals of geometry.
1. Make the Shape Scavenger Hunt Using Posters
Have your child create a poster with the shapes they've learned about in the book. They can draw a picture of the actual object or if they're unsure, they can write "oval" next to it. After a while, they can begin to use the posters as a reference when they are looking for the shapes in their surroundings.
2. Adapt this Lesson for Toddlers and Preschoolers
If you're teaching toddlers or preschoolers, it can be difficult to find books with images of real objects that are in the shape of shapes. However, this activity is a great way to give your kids a chance to practice identifying and drawing the correct shape while also getting some extra physical movement in.
3. Have your child search for items in the shape of a clock, window or kite as part of this outdoor scavenger hunt.
This outdoor activity is perfect for toddlers, preschoolers and kindergarteners as they can get some exercise while finding different shaped items around their neighborhood. It's a free printable that comes in color and black and white versions and can be printed multiple times.
4. Have your child look for things that are shaped like circles, squares and triangles as part of this scavenger hunt.
This scavenger hunt is a great way to introduce kids to the concept of circles, squares and triangles as well as the name of each shape. It's a fun way to get outside, have some exercise and have some fun while you're at it!
5. Adapt this Lesson for older Students
If your student is a bit older than the suggested age range for this activity, they will be able to complete it independently. You can print out the scavenger hunt, or you can have them look for it in their school, at work or on a trip and they can do it with their classmates, family members or friends.
6. Have your child make a collage of tissue paper shapes
To make this activity even more fun, ask your child to create a collage out of pre-cut tissue paper shapes. Then, have them use the pictures they've made to talk about how each shape is different and what attributes it has.
