Snowfall - A Review of the FX Crime Drama
Those looking for a good, old-fashioned American crime drama might want to check out Snowfall. This FX series takes a hard look at the 1980s crack cocaine epidemic in Los Angeles, California. Specifically, the show revolves around the rise of a drug kingpin, a family on the verge of wealth and privilege, and a small group of individuals who are caught up in the mess.
Although the story is fictional, it is based on real events. In the early 1980s, there was an outbreak of crack cocaine that ruined the lives of many people in major cities throughout the U.S., including San Francisco, New York, and Los Angeles. Several films have been made about this, including Juice, Fresh, and Straight Out of Brooklyn. The film Menace II Society also depicted the same phenomenon.
In Snowfall, the protagonist, Franklin Saint, is an ambitious L.A. teenager who gets into business with high-powered international criminals. He is eventually given the role of prime distributor of crack cocaine. As a result of his connections and ego, Franklin quickly becomes one of the richest men in town. But a few years after the start of the series, Franklin and his family begin to fall out of favor.
There are numerous aspects of the series that are entertaining. Besides the drug trade, there are raunzier scenes, sex, and cursing. In addition, the series shows how the characters navigate small-time gangster infrastructure in their own neighborhood. The show has a strong sexual content, and often shows the use of pot and cigarettes. But some parts of the show aren't based on true events.
For instance, the "snowfall" mentioned in the pilot episode is not true. The actual amount of snowfall is much smaller than what is depicted on the show. The pilot episode features cocaine and porn stars. It is, however, the first episode to feature an actual crack epidemic.
Another interesting thing about Snowfall is the production. The show is produced by FX Productions, executive produced by Leonard Chang and Thomas Schlamme, and co-produced by Damson Idris. The production uses state-of-the-art LED technology. The show is available on Netflix, Hulu Plus, Vudu, iTunes, and Amazon Instant Video. The series airs Wednesdays at 10pm ET/PT.
The show has been renewed for a sixth season. It premiered in July 2017. The series will conclude with a sixth and final season in February 2022. The show is also available on Hulu and Google Play. The soundtrack includes West Coast rap. There are also a few naughty moments in the show, including a scene in which a woman tries to kiss an agent.
Overall, Snowfall is an interesting look at the crack cocaine epidemic of the 1980s. It also shows how the drug industry affected a wide range of people. Moreover, it pushes the limits of explicit content on basic cable.
While some aspects of the show are not based on fact, the show does its best to make a statement about the drug trade and what it means to the economy. In a way, it is the story of a rising drug kingpin in the middle of a crack cocaine epidemic.
