House Of Cards (DVD) Review
Having been on the air for five seasons, House Of Cards continues to entertain viewers. The series, which is set in Washington D.C., follows the rise of an ambitious politician, Frank Underwood. The series is based on a 1990 BBC miniseries. Frank's daughter, Claire, plays a role in the story. The show also stars Kevin Spacey as Frank Underwood and Robin Wright as Claire. They both earned Emmy Awards for their roles, with Spacey winning Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series. However, it was Spacey's alleged sexual misconduct that tipped the scales in favour of cancelling the show. The scandal was eventually resolved.
Frank Underwood is the House Majority Whip in the House of Representatives. He represents the fifth congressional district of South Carolina. He is also a political operative who initiates an elaborate scheme to get into power. The scheme works by having a mole hack into the National Security Agency (NSA), which erases any information that is incriminating. In a way, the hacking looks like terrorist activity, but the mole makes the hacking look like a harmless affair.
House Of Cards also stars Kate Mara, Corey Stoll, Michael Kelly, Robin Wright, James Foley, Jodie Foster, and Jayne Atkinson. Kevin Spacey is no longer the show's lead character. His role was replaced by Remy Danton in season three.
Season three sees Frank's wife, Claire, gaining more power and influence, while her brother, Douglas, continues to work for the underdog. Claire becomes First Lady of the United States and also acts as the United States' ambassador to the United Nations. She also serves as the Vice President of the United States in season five.
The series is set in a fictionalized version of the Democratic Party's underbelly in the White House. Several of the characters are addicted to the idea of power, and they enact control through weird constitutional loopholes. But the show does not fully explore the possibilities of an alternate dystopia. It doesn't have the slick special effects or giant explosions of movies like The Avengers or Transparent. Despite this, House Of Cards feels unique and American.
House Of Cards also explores how an American political leader can use his power to benefit himself and the party. This is not only true of Frank Underwood, but of the Underwood family as well. They are willing to kill people in order to gain power, but they don't want to be held responsible for their actions. Moreover, there is a lot of cynicism in the House of Cards universe. The show repeatedly suggests that Bill and Hillary Clinton would be more successful if they were to kill people.
The series' political machinations are at their apex when it's days before the presidential elections. Frank's family attempts to use their political power to help him win the elections. He also puts Claire on the ticket for the upcoming election. In the season five finale, Frank is potentially in danger of being accused of a crime.
