Simon Dawson is a father of two with limited vision. He can only see light or dark. As a result, he is unable to see details like colours and edges. When he was diagnosed with blindness, Simon decided to learn how to overcome his limitations and start running. He first read the book Ultramarathon Man by Dean Karnazes, an ultra-runner who has surpassed all physical barriers, and he was inspired by his story.

After escaping the city, Simon meets Five and Maxine at Rowantree Manor. He takes the guise of Dr. Peter Necropolis and begins contacting fugitives from the town of Abel. While contacting these fugitives, he gets infected with an anti-mind control serum and runs with a hallucinating Five. Later, he and Five escape from zombies and find refuge in an abandoned mental hospital.

Born in Grenada, Simon moved to the U.S. when he was just a teenager. After graduating from high school, Simon pursued a degree in business at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa. At the same time, he met Kelly Escorcia, who was on the women's cross country team. Simon has been running ever since and has completed 15 marathons. Although he no longer chases PRs, he still balances his running with weight training.

Simon was also instrumental in training a woman to establish a new women's speed record, the South African Fernanda Maciel. The two ran the entire route in less than 19 hours, shaving two hours and 52 minutes from the previous record for women. Though Simon does not want to break any more records, he does train for fun with international runners and leads regular climbs.
