The state of New York is taking steps to address its school bus driver shortage. This is a growing problem for districts across the state and the country. For instance, the Department of Transportation is working to expand its capacity to deliver training and testing, including utilizing large lots that may have otherwise been unused.

The state Education Department also is considering implementing a virtual school bus safety drill to help teach students how to properly evacuate a school bus. Other steps include implementing a new curriculum for pupil transportation professionals.

Another step that the state is taking is to promote a two-hour refresher course for school bus drivers. This course will provide information on the basics of vehicle maintenance, freeway driving, and parking.

The DMV is also launching a new program for applicants who are interested in obtaining a School Bus Endorsement. Applicants will need to meet a variety of requirements, including passing a skills test and passing a pre-trip inspection. If they do, they will be eligible for an expedited testing session.

There are many other measures being taken to address the growing school bus driver shortage, ranging from a new website to a multi-pronged recruiting campaign. The New York State United Teachers and other educators have praised the state's plans to recruit more drivers.

Lastly, the state is also considering a new incentive for school districts to recruit more drivers. Some school districts are offering incentives such as more pay and job sharing. They can also work with charter, independent, and religious schools to get the best possible match.
